Game 1

#2 St. Mary of the Woods 5, #7 Judson 1

Akron, OH - St. Mary of the Woods jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning and with the help of a complete game from All-American Sara Goelz, defeated Judson 5-1.  Katelyn Tillotson led the offensive attack for the Lady Pomeroys, going 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs and one run scored.  Judson’s only run came in the second inning courtesy of Raelynn Liveoak solo home run.  St. Mary of the Woods will next face #6 Penn State Mont Alto game, tonight at 6:00 p.m.  Judson will play St. Joseph’s (NY), tonight at 6:00 p.m.

Game 2

#6 PSU Mont Alto 2, #3 St. Joseph's (NY) 1

Akron, OH - In a game controlled by a pair of All-American starting pitchers, Kristyan Gates of PSU Mont Alto, and Alyison Chiaramonte of St. Joseph’s each threw complete games, with Gates striking out nine and Chiaramonte with eight.  Helene DeShong’s single in the third inning drove in Kaylee Poole to give PSU Mont Alto the lead at 1-0.  Kiera Fleagle added another run after scoring on a passed ball.  Chiaramonte’s double in fourth inning put the Lady Bears on the board.  PSU Mont Alto will meet #2 St. Mary of the Woods in the second round, at 6:00 p.m. tonight.  St. Joseph’s will face #7 Judson at 6:00 p.m in an elimination game.  

Game 3

#1 Rochester 9, #8 Penn College 1

Akron, OH - Top ranked Rochester jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning and behind a strong pitching performance by Mellissa Lehman defeated Penn College 9-1. Lehman pitched an efficient complete game, throwing just 51 pitches while recording six strikeouts.  The Lady Warriors offense was led by Erica Murray and All-American Briana Serrato who combined for five hits, four RBIs, and three runs scored.  Fellow All-American Katie Ogg added two runs.  Penn College’s Michelle Goodling represented the Lady Wildcats lone run with her home run in the fifth inning.   

Game 4

#4 PSU Beaver 5, #5 Spalding 4, 8 innings

Akron, OH – Penn State Beaver freshman Myranda Raymond’s walk off double in the bottom of the eighth inning gave the Lady Lions the victory.  For the game Raymond went 3 for 3 with three RBIs.  After trailing 4-1 heading into the seventh inning, Spalding capitalized on three Beaver errors as they scored three runs to force extra innings.  The Lady Golden Eagles were led by Peyton French who went 3 for 3 with an RBI.  All-American Ashley Watkins added two hits and a pair of RBIs for Beaver.  PSU Beaver will face #1 Rochester tomorrow at 2:00 pm.  Spalding will face #8 Penn College, in an elimination game tomorrow at 12:00 pm.

Game 5

#2 St. Mary of the Woods 5, #6 PSU Mont Alto 2

Akron, OH - After trailing 2-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, St. Mary of the Woods scored four runs in the inning, en route to a 5-2 victory.  Leah Miller led the Lady Pomeroys as she drove in three runs on two hits.  All-American Sara Goelz threw her second consecutive  complete game of the tournament, with five strikeouts.  PSU Mont Alto’s All-American Kristyan Gates threw six innings allowing just one earned run.  St. Mary of the Woods advances to the semifinals where they will face the loser of game 11, tonight at 9:30.  PSU Mont Alto will play Spalding in an elimination game, this afternoon at 2:30 pm.

 Game 7

#1 Rochester 11, #4 PSU Beaver 5

Akron, OH - Rochester made a late comeback scoring eight runs in the sixth inning to defeat Penn State Beaver 11-5, to advance to the National Semifinals.  All-American Briana Serrato led the comeback for the Lady Warriors as she drove in both the tying and game winning runs with her two-out RBI double. For the game Serrato went 2-4 with three RBIs.  Fellow All-American Tessa Tomlin chipped in going 4-4 and two runs scored.   After Beaver took the lead 5-3 after the fifth inning, Paige Henley came out of the bullpen to pitch two innings of relief without surrendering a base runner for Rochester.  Beaver’s Myranda Raymond had three RBIs, giving her six for the tournament. Lindsey Scialdone scored a pair of runs and drove in another for the Lady Lions.  Rochester will play Spalding University tonight at 7:30 pm, while Beaver will face Judson College, tonight at 4:00, in an elimination game.

Elimination Round

Game 6

#7 Judson 2, St. Joseph's (NY) 0

Akron, OH- Judson scored two runs in the third inning, and with a complete game shutout performance by Meliah Matthew, was able to defeat St. Joseph’s 2-0.  Sarah Kendrick started the scoring with an RBI single to centerfield that scored Heather Howell, capping a string of three straight singles.  St. Joseph’s threatened in the fourth placing runners at second and third with no outs, but was unable to bring any runners home.  All-American Alyson Chiaramonte pitched a complete game for St. Joseph’s allowing one earned run on five hits.  Alyson added 3 hits at the plate.  The game was halted due to lightning after the conclusion of the sixth inning with Judson leading 2-0.  Judson remains in championship contention as they will face the PSU Beaver, tonight at 6:00 pm.  St. Joseph’s will play in the 7th place game against #8 Penn College, tomorrow at 11:30 am.  

Game 8

#5 Spalding 7, #8 Penn College 0

Akron, OH- Sara Goff led Spalding going 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs and one run scored, as Spalding defeated Penn College 7-0 to remain in championship contention.  Pitchers Tia Mcintosh and Liz Schooler combined to pitch a complete game shutout, with 12 stikeouts total.  All-American Amanda Zwicker knocked in one run for the Lady Golden Eagles.  Penn College’s Lacy Lose pitched 2 and 1/3 shutout innings of relief, allowing just one hit.  Spalding advances to play #6 Mont Alto in an elimination game, later today at 2:30 pm.  The Lady Wildcats will play St. Joseph’s in the 7th place game tomorrow morning at 11:30. 

Game 9

#5 Spalding 6, #6 PSU Mont Alto 2

Akron, OH - Spalding scored three innings in the first inning and never looked back as they defeated PSU Mont Alto to advance to the semifinals.   Sarah Goff continued her high level of play as she led the Lady Golden Eagles offensive attack with her 3 for 4, one RBI, and One run scored performance.  Callie Howard added two RBIs and scored one run for Spalding..  All-american pitcher Rene Philipot threw a complete game, allowing two runs on seven hits.  Kaylee Poole  went 3 for 3 with one run scored for Mont Alto.  Spalding will face #1 Rochester in the semifinals, while Mont Alto will play the loser of the PSU Beaver/Judson game, in the fifth place game, tomorrow afternoon at 12:00 pm. 

 Game 10

#7 Judson 4, #4 PSU Beaver 2

Akron, OH - The Judson College Lady Eagles scored three runs in the 6th inning to defeat Penn State Beaver Lady Lions, 4-2.  Judson scored four unearned runs to claim the victory. Malina Graff and Samantha Hale each had two hits for Judson, while Maliah Matthew had their only RBI.  In the fifth inning, Matthew came in and pitched three innings of scoreless relief to seal the victory.  For PSU Beaver, All-American Korey Freyermuth and Myranda Raymond each had RBI’s, while Lindsey Scialdone added three hits. With the victory, Judson will face #2 St. Mary of the Woods in the National Semifinal tonight at 9:00, while Penn State Beaver will face PSUAC rival Penn State Mont Alto in the 5th place game, tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.

Game 11

#5 Spalding 1, #1 Rochester 0, 9 innings

Akron, OH- Sarah Goff’s sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the ninth inning allowed All-American Hannah Strucker to score the game winning run for Spalding as they defeated Rochester, 1-0.  In a game where scoring opportunities were at a premium, both starting pitchers went the distance.  Spalding’s Tia McIntosh pitched a complete game shutout, allowing five hits.  Rochester’s Paige Henley went 8 and 1/3 innings, allowing one run on four hits.  Spalding was led offensively once again by Sarah Goff who went 2 for 4 and the game winning RBI.  Meanwhile, Rochester who came into the game with highest ranked offense in tournament play, were led by Courtney Dunlap and Paige Henley who each had two hits for the Lady Warriors.  The teams will meet again later tonight at 10:45, for the right to play in the Championship Series, scheduled to begin tomorrow at 4:00 pm.

 Game 13

#1 Rochester 5, #5 Spalding 4, 9 innings

Akron, OH - Melissa Roys’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning, drove in All-American Briana Serrato, advancing Rochester to their first ever National Championship appearance.  Both teams scored in the eighth inning with Spalding score coming Katie Phillips sacrifice fly, while Rochester answered with Tessa Tomlin’s RBI double.  The Lady Warriors jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning after All-American Katie Ogg drove in Lynnsey Norat and Katy Peacock.  Spalding came back to tie the game at 3-3 in the sixth inning after Rena Philpot’s double drove in Amanda Zwicker and Sarah Goff.  Philpot also pitched 8 and 2/3 innings. Allowing three earned runs, and striking out six, for Spalding.  Rochester’s Paige Henley came in to pitch 3 and 1/3 innings of relief, allowing one hit, and one run. Rochester’ s All-American Tessa Tomlin went 2 for 4 with one RBI, while Katie Ogg went 3 for 4.  Rochester will face the winner of St. Mary of the Woods/ Judson semifinal, in the Championship Series, while Spalding will face the loser of that game in the Third Place game.  The Championship Series is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm, Sunday night.  The Third Place game will begin at 4:00 pm.

 Game 12

#7 Judson 3, #2 St. Mary of the Woods 2, 8 innings

Akron, OH - In the bottom of the eighth inning, Malina Graff drove in sister Melia to keep Judson alive for a birth to the Championship Series.  Judson pitcher Melia Matthew improved to 3-0 in the tournament as she went the distance, allowing eight hits and one earned run.  St. Mary of the Woods All-American Sara Goelz also went the distance allowing four hits and one earned run.  Judson’s offensive attack was led by the three Graff sisters, Malina, Melia, and Tori, who accounted for all four hits and drove in the three Lady Eagles runs.  The Lady Pomeroys were led offensively by Katelyn Tillotson and Leah Miller, both of whom had two hits and one RBI apiece.  Both teams will play each other tomorrow at 11:30 am, with the winner advancing to the Championship Series, and the loser playing in the Third Place game.  The Championship Series is scheduled to begin at 5:30 pm, and the Third Place Game slated to be played at 4:00 pm.

Semifinals

Game 14

#2 St. Mary of the Woods 6, #7 Judson 2

Akron, OH - St. Mary of the Woods scored five runs in the fifth and sixth inning combined to pull away from Judson, 6-2 to reach the National Championship Series.  All-American Sara Goelz (3-1) continues to pitch well in the Tournament as she pitched her third complete game of the tournament, allowing two runs on just five hits.  Katelyn Tillotson led the offensive attack for the Pomeroys going 3 for 4 with two RBIs.  All-American Jessica Jonas added a pair of RBIs with her bases clearing triple in the fifth inning, and Chelsee Gerber was 3 for 4 with two runs scored.  Melia Graff led Judson going 2 for 4, with two runs scored.  Sarah Kendrick added two hits and one RBI for the Eagles.  Judson will face #5 Spalding in the third place game, today at 4:00 pm.  St. Mary of the Woods will be going for their seventh National Championship, as they face #1 Rochester in the National Championship Series, (Best of Three format), beginning 5:30 pm, today.

 Seventh Place Game

#3 St. Joseph's 9, #8 Penn College 1, six innings

Akron, OH - All-American Alyson Chiaramonte led St. Joseph’s with a 4-for-4 day at the plate with two runs and a RBI and ends the week with a tournament-leading .800 batting average (8-for-10).   Chiaramonte also earned the win in the circle allowing one run on six hits and striking out six.   Fellow All-Americans also contributed to the victory as Danielle Marino knocked in a pair of runs and Caitlyn Kakavas had two hits with a RBI.  Penn College (0-3) scored their only run in the third on a Sabrina Reynolds RBI single scoring Amber Eck who led off with the inning with a double.   Tiffany Deihm took the loss for the Wildcats going only 1 1/3 innings, allowing five runs (all earned) on three hits.

Fifth Place Game

#4 PSU Beaver 9, #6 PSU Mont Alto 1, five innings

Akron, OH - Penn State Beaver beat their PSUAC rival Penn State Mont Alto, 9-2, in 4 ½ innings via the mercy rule, to claim 5th place at the USCAA Softball National Championships. Beaver exploded for eight runs on seven hits in the third inning to claim the victory.  Seven Beaver batters each had an RBI four, with four players having a multiple hit game, including All-American Ashley Watkins who also scored two runs.   On the mound, Kayla Chambers pitched five innings of four hit ball, struck out four, and did not allow an earned run.   Alicia Morgan scored Mont Alto’s lone run in the third inning.

 Third Place Game

#5 Spalding 3, #7 Judson 2

Akron, OH - All-American Hannah Stucker’s double in the bottom of the seventh drove in Shelby Pfaadt to give Spalding the victory and third place in the National Championships.  Tia McIntosh had another strong pitching performance earning her third win of the tournament as she pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on three hits.

In the first inning Spalding jumped out to an early 2-0 lead following RBIs from Paige French and McIntosh.  Judson came back in the second inning and cut the deficit to 2-1 after Chelbie Greenhaw’s double  drove in All-American Malina Graff.  In the sixth inning Judson’s Raelynn Greenhaw drove in Eriana Hammond to tie the game at 2.

Judson’s Ashley Sawyer retired twelve straight batters between the second and fifth inning.  For the game Sawyer pitched 6 and 1/3 innings allowing three runs (1 unearned) on nine hits. 

The third place finish is the best finish in the National Tournament for Spalding, who last made the tournament in 2008.  Judson, making their fourth National tournament in the last five years, finished fourth for the first time in school history.

Akron, OH - Rochester jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the second inning, and  with the aid of a combined shutout by pitchers Mellissa Lehman and Katy Peacock, took game one of the National Championship Series.  Lehman pitched four and 2/3 innings allowing six hits and striking out five.  Peacock who inherited runners on first and second, came in the fourth inning and went two and 1/3 innings without surrendering a hit, to earn the save.

All-American Briana Serrato continues her quest for Tournament MVP as she led the Lady Warriors offense, with her 2 for 3, and two RBI performance.  Fellow Rochester All-American’s Katie Ogg and Tessa Tomlin combined for two hits and three runs scored. 

St. Mary of the Woods All-American Sara Goelz had another solid pitching performance, going six innings, allowing three runs on seven hits.  Katelyn Tillotson led the Pomeroy’s offense with two hits.

The second game of the Championship Series will is set to begin tonight at 8:30 pm.  Rochester is one win away for securing their first USCAA Softball National Championship.  A St. Mary of the Woods victory will send the series to third and final game, with the National Championship on the line.

Akron, OH - Rochester College has won their first USCAA Softball Championship, as they defeated #2 St. Mary of the Woods 8-6, in Game 2 of the National Championship Series.   In the top of the seventh the Lady Warriors trailed 6-4, Tournament MVP Briana Seratto's RBI double cut the deficit to 6-5. With zero outs and runners at second and third, Meliisa Roy cleared the bases with her fourth double of the tournament to give Rochester a 7-6 lead.  Courtney Dunlap added an insurance run with her RBI single, to extend the lead to 8-6.  In the bottom of the seventh the Pomeroys put runners on at second and third with one out, but could not advance the runners any closer as pitcher Paige Henley came in for Rochester and sealed the victory and the championship for the Lady Warriors.
