SUNY Canton Celebrates NGWSD and Skate with the Roos

Canton, NY – Following Sunday's women's hockey win the SUNY Canton Athletics department celebrated National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) along with Skate with the Roos.

NGWSD, which began in 1987, has become a day to acknowledge the past accomplishments of female athletes, recognize current sports achievements, the positive influence of sports participation, and the continuing push for equality and access for women in sports.  Since its inception, NGWSD has been celebrated annually in all 50 states with community-based events, award ceremonies, and activities honoring the achievements of female athletes and encouraging participation of girls and women in sports. The Roos honored their female sports teams and coaches for the sports of softball, women's volleyball, cross country, soccer, lacrosse, basketball and golf.

Men's basketball's Massiah Merritt continues to add to legacy at Berkeley College by reaching 1,000-point plateau for his career

In early January, Berkeley College men's basketball standout Massiah Merritt eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career. He has established himself as one of the most dynamic players the program has ever seen, and has been a key component during what has been the greatest stretch of basketball the program has ever witnessed (46 consecutive victories, 57 wins in 58 games overall).

During his sophomore season with the Knights back in 2014-2015, Merritt accumulated a total of 392 points, playing a key role in Berkeley College winning regional (HVIAC) and National (USCAA) championships. Last season, the 6'2, Nia Prep High School product scored a whopping 430 points as the Knights once again captured HVIAC and USCAA crowns, and now this season – he has netted 284 points in 22 games. Head Coach Chris Christiansen praised the three-year Knight for his brilliant efforts during his Berkeley career.

"Massiah Merritt is a student-athlete who brings a unique skill set with him to the hardwood every single game," Christiansen said. "He can contribute in so many ways. Not only can he be a prolific scorer as evidenced by this amazing accomplishment, but he also has tremendous court vision, can rebound the basketball, and can play stellar defense. We are all very proud of his career, and we're looking forward to seeing him finish strong this season."

Merritt has also been named one of SmallCollegeBasketball.com's top 100 players, and is currently in consideration for the Clarence "Bevo" Francis Award. The Award is presented annually to the player who has had the finest overall season within Small College Basketball. Considerations are season statistics and individual achievements, awards, personal character and team achievements.  This is an incredibly prestigious award, as this award will only be given to one player within Small College Basketball per season.
