Winning pitcher Andrew Raschen was 2-for-4
and held Columbia Union to two hits as the Seahawks defeated
the Pioneers 6-1 to win the 2006 USCAA National Invitational
Baseball Tournament. In earlier games, Columbia Union College
rallied to defeat Presentation College 5-4, and Briarcliffe
College held off a late Apprentice School rally to advance to
the championship by a 4-3 count.
The 2006 All-Tournament team was selected
and the honorees are listed after the recaps that follow.

A Mike Passarell two-run single in the top of the seventh
followed by a Ryan Brown single provided the winning advantage
for Columbia Union College as they rallied to defeat
Presentation College.
The Saints scored four runs in the bottom
of the fourth with RBI singles from Billy Grueter and Ryan
Ellingson along with an RBI groundout from Matt Lokenvitz.
Charles Rupert, Brandon Hall and Passarell
all had two hits for the Pioneers while Ryan Ellingson was
2-for-4 to lead Presentation.
Brad McLaughlin went six innings to pick up
the win for Columbia Union striking out six and allowing six
hits. Andrew Mars pitched one inning to pick up the save.

Briarcliffe College scored four runs in the
first three innings and held off a late Apprentice School
rally to advance to the championship.
The Seahawks scored a run in the first on
an error, two in the second on a RBI single from Mike
Sorrentino and a RBI double from Dan OBrien. They added
one in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Justin McKay.
Apprentice School scored a run in the fifth
on a RBI double from Eric Polk and two more in the sixth on an
RBI double from Cato Dixon and a RBI single from Bryce Beale.
Mike Ziegler picked up the win going 5.1
innings allowing three runs and five hits while Baldwin Vargas
earned the save throwing the last 1.2 innings and one hit. Ben
Jones took the loss for Apprentice School allowing nine hits
and striking out six. He ended his career with 501 strikeouts.

Briarcliffe busted a 1-all game open with
three runs in the sixth inning and scored single runs in the
seventh and eighth to take the tournament crown.
