Dine College Men, Southern Virginia Women Win USCAA Cross Country Titles
Kirwa, Calkins win individual crowns in meet hosted by SVU

BUENA VISTA, Va. (Oct. 27, 2006) – Southern Virginia University and Dine College took the top two spots in the men’s and women’s races at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Cross Country National Championship at Glen Maury Park in Buena Vista, Va.

SVU’s women won the title for the sixth-consecutive season and the eighth time in school history while Dine’s women took second. The Dine men’s team won the title while the Knights came in second for the second-straight year.

Junior Midge Sullivan of SVU took second overall (first in points) in the race by running a personal best of 26:02 in the 6k. Lindsay Calkins, the only runner from Lyndon State, was first overall with a time of 24:21.

Overall, the Knights took five of the top 12 spots with Sullivan in second, Jan Frodsham fourth (26:46), Catherine Pohm fifth (26:53), Shaina Brown eighth (27:29) and Bridget Gonzalez 12th (27:56). SVU finished with its best team score in championship history at 24, 31 better than second-place Dine.

After SVU and Dine, Warren Wilson was third, Columbia Union College was fourth and New Hampshire Technical Institute was fifth. The women’s All-Americans were Calkins, Sullivan, Heather Searles (NHTI), Frodsham, Pohm, Amy Young (Penn State Dubois) and Venessa Jones (Columbia Union). It was Sullivan’s second-straight year earning All-America honors.

Dine won the men’s 8k race with a team score of 30 and was led by Jacob Kirwa’s meet-winning time of 27:01. Freshman Casey Cheever of SVU was second at 27:31 and he was followed by Tony Perez of Dine (27:48) and Jeff White of SVU (27:58). Dine’s other scorers were Aaron Johnson (sixth), James Nduyti (seventh) and Cody Tipler (13th).

The Knights were second as a team with a score of 46. Following Cheever and White were BJ Awerkamp (10th), Jordan Bennett (12th) and Sevy Price (18th).

Rounding out the men’s teams in finishing order were Lyndon, Warren Wilson, NHTI, Rhema and Columbia Union.

The men’s All-Americans were Kirwa, Cheever, Perez, White, Johnson, Nduyti and Bobby Penney (Lyndon). The All-America honors were the second for White.

On Thursday night the USCAA announced the Academic All-America team. Following is a list of the honorees:
