Robert Morris-Springfield knocks off top-seeded Penn State Beaver 6-1
HAMPTON, VA. - Senior Jake Walsh allowed five hits and one run in seven innings as eighth-seeded Robert Morris Springfield knocked off top-seeded Penn State Beaver 6-1 in the opening round of the 2008 USCAA National Championships at War Memorial Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
Robert Morris Springfield now advances to face the winner of the Lyndon State-Apprentice School game at 9 pm tonight, while Penn State Beaver faces the loser in an 11 am elimination game on Wednesday.
The Eagles opened scoring in the first inning as Adam Hays doubled in Miles Morris who started the game with a single. In the fourth, Ryan Butcher singled in T.J. McCoy to give Robert Morris a 2-0 lead. The next inning the Eagles added another before scoring three in the seventh as Garrett Moyer doubled in a pair and Butcher singled in another.
Walsh gave up a run in the seventh as Ryan Rarigh started with a single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Justin Parasida.
Butcher and Moyer had three hits and two RBIs apiece for Robert Morris while Nick Joyce added a pair of hits. Five players had a hit apiece for Penn State Beaver.
