Robert Morris-Springfield eliminates Southern Maine CC 7-3
HAMPTON, VA. - Senior Justin Anderson went 2-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs to back the seven-hit pitching effort of Chris Smith as Robert Morris-Springfield eliminated Southern Maine CC 7-3 in the 2008 USCAA Baseball National Championships on Wednesday afternoon.
The Eagles now advance to face Lyndon State College in a game to determine fourth place in the championships which will start at 4:40 pm EST.
Robert Morris started the scoring with a pair of runs in the first inning taking advantage of a pair of Seawolves errors for a 2-0 advantage. Southern Maine CC answered with a run in the first taking advantage of an error and two stolen bases from Scott Nappi who scored on a groundout.
In the third, Robert Morris scored a run on a RBI double from Anderson who scored Jake Walsh who had singled.
The victors then broke it open with four runs in the seventh on RBI singles from Coltin Cunningham, Anderson, a suicide squeeze from Kris Pickett and the fourth run scored on a throwing error for a 7-1 lead.
Shawn Hall had a two-run double in the seventh for Southern Maine CC in the seventh, but that was the end of the scoring.
Chris Smith went seven innings allowing seven hits and two walks for Robert Morris-Springfield. Sean Casey had two hits to pace Southern Maine CC.
