Game MVP and Tournament MVP Phillip Dean went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Kaleb Henry was 3-for-5 with two RBIs as second-seeded Saint Catharine College completed a sweep of the 2009 USCAA Baseball National Championships with a 6-4 victory over fourth-seeded Columbia Union College on Thursday.
The Patriots jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings as Henry singled in a pair of runs and Patrick Jones hit a sacrifice fly. They expanded it to 5-0 in the next inning on a RBI double from Dean and a RBI single from Jared Yates. In the fifth they made it 6-0 on scoring a run on a throwing error.
Columbia Union answered with four runs in the top of the eighth as All-Tournament selection Robert Arvanites smashed a three-run home run to left center and Richard Arciniega drove in one with a single.
GAME 1: ST. CATHARINE 6, PENN STATE GREATER ALLEGHENY 0
Game MVP Travis Adams set a tournament record with 13 strikeouts and allowing only a leadoff single as second-seeded Saint Catharine College defeated seventh-seeded Penn State Greater Allegheny in the opening game of the tournament.
Adams allowed a leadoff single to Craig Williams but settled into a groove striking out 13, allowing one hit and walking two in the opening game gem.
Jared Yates was 2-for-4 for Saint Catharine with a double and two RBIs, while Shane Dean went 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Josh Landers went 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Patriots.
GAME 2: BRIARCLIFFE 12, PENN COLLEGE 5
Mike Rocco, Dan Rodriguez and Dave Darcy had three hits apiece for sixth-seeded Briarcliffe College who knocked off third-seeded Penn College 12-5 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Seahawks broke the game open with a four-run second and a six-run fifth inning. That inning was highlighted by a two-run Reggie Smith home run down the left field line.
Penn College scored its runs in the seventh inning taking advantage of two errors in scoring five runs. The inning started with a walk to Adam Thomke and a two-run shot by Devon Liquori down the left field line.
Matt Gelormino took the win for Briarcliffe and Game MVP honors holding a potent Penn College scoreless over his six innings of work while striking out seven and allowing five hits.
GAME 3: COLUMBIA UNION 6, UC CLERMONT 2
Fourth-seeded Columbia Union College scored five runs in the first inning and went on to a 6-2 victory over fifth-seeded University of Cincinnati Clermont in the third game of the day Tuesday.
Michael Miller broke the game open with a two-run single to highlight the five-run outburst. Graym Kasko and Robert Arvanites went 2-for-3 apiece to lead a seven-hit attack for the Pioneers.
Alex Machain picked up the win throwing four innings and allowing one hit. Steven Sitter earned his sixth save of the season for the Pioneers with one inning of work striking out two.
John Kennedy had two of UC Clermont's five hits going 2-for-4 at shortstop.
GAME 4: ST. CATHARINE 11, BRIARCLIFFE 2
Second-seeded Saint Catharine College scored in every inning as they defeated sixth-seded Briarcliffe College 11-2 early Tuesday evening.
Game MVP Brian Jones was 3-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI while Shane Young was 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored as the Patriots had 12 hits in the game.
Dan Rodriguez had two of Briarcliffe's five hits in the game going 2-for-3. Mike Rocco drove in one of their two runs.
GAME 5: APPRENTICE SCHOOL 1, COLUMBIA UNION 0
Ryan Wagner's one-out double in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Jonathan Dehoux with the winning run as The Apprentice School defeated Columbia Union in a battle of the last two USCAA National Champions 1-0.
Junior Dallas Wagner won his 11th decision on the season striking out eight, including the last two batters to end the game for the Builders.
The Pioneers out-hit the Builders 5-4 in the pitchers dual.
GAME 6: PENN COLLEGE 7, PENN STATE GREATER ALLEGHENY 4
Game MVP Devon Liquori smashed his second home run of the tournament in a three-run first inning as the Wildcats of Penn College advanced with a victory Wednesday morning.
His two-out, two-run shot to left field put the third-seeded Wildcats up 2-0. They plated another run in the first and added single runs in the third and fifth innings. Joe Vassallo drove in two runs being hit by a pitch twice in the game.
Adam Thomke earned the win for Penn College throwing 6.2 innings with Skylar Gingrich striking out the last batter for the save.
Brandon Myers was 3-for-4 for Penn State Greater Allegheny who out-hit the Wildcats 10-4.
GAME 7: UC CLERMONT 6, BRIARCLIFFE 3
Tim Oberschlake and Mike Blume combined on a four-hitter as fifth-seeded University of Cincinnati Clermont advanced with a 6-3 win over Briarcliffe College.
Bobby Noeth went 3-for-3 with a run and Steve Hendrickson went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a RBI for the Cougars who broke the game open with a three-run sixth inning.
UC Clermont out-hit the Seahawks 10-4 as Oberschlake earned the win with five innings of work allowing three hits and three runs.
GAME 8: COLUMBIA UNION 7, PENN COLLEGE 0
Steven Sitter, Payton Davis and Casey Cosgrove combined on a five-hit shutout for Columbia Union College as they eliminated Penn College.
Four Pioneers had a pair of hits each paced by Matthew Magallon who was 2-for-4 with a run, RBI and three stolen bases.
Devon Liquori was 3-for-3 to account for three of the five Penn College hits.
GAME 9: ST. CATHARINE 13, APPRENTICE SCHOOL 2
Brian Jones drove in three runs and Brad Krohman hit a three-run home run for second-seeded Saint Catharine College as they blasted its way to the USCAA Championship game with a 13-2 win over top-seeded Apprentice School.
Shane Young and game MVP Josh Landers had three hits each as the Patriots outhit the Builders 16-7.
Ryan Wagner and Eric Polk had two hits each for the Builders.
GAME 10: COLUMBIA UNION 8, CINCINNATI CLERMONT 3
Game MVP Jason Fischer went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Anthony Weber drove in a pair with a double as Columbia Union eliminated University of Cincinnati Clermont 8-3 in the nightcap on Wednesday.
After giving up a run in the first, the Pioneers broke it open with five runs in the fourth inning highlighted by Fischer's three-run double. In the fifth, Weber drove in his runs with a double that put the Pioneers up 7-1. Casey Cosgrove earned the win for Columbia Union throwing three innings of two-hit relief.
All-Tournament selection Tony Ramirez was 2-for-3 to lead a seven hit attack for the Cougars who finished fourth in their first-ever USCAA National Championship appearance.
GAME 11: COLUMBIA UNION 4, APPRENTICE SCHOOL 3
The fourth-seeded Pioneers scored two runs in the top of the seventh to eliminate the top-seeded Apprentice School Builders 4-3 in the third-place game Thursday.
Justin Roman was 2-for-3 for the Pioneers with Steven Sitter earning Game MVP honors closing out the contest with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Dory Fields was 2-for-3 for The Apprentice School as Daniel Lutz took the loss.
