Florida College defeats Southern Virginia 95-79 in men's quarterfinal

Broken Arrow, Okla. - Pete Alexandrou scored a team-high 21 points to lead all five Florida College starters in double figures as the fifth-seeded Falcons defeated Southern Virginia University 95-79 in the 2008 U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Basketball Championships on Thursday morning.

The Falcons started the game fast hitting 17-of-28 from the floor for 60.7% as they raced out to a 41-29 advantage.  Southern Virginia had troubles hitting their 3-point shots as they were 3-of-16 from the floor from three-point land (16.7%) and 11-of-33 overall (33.3%).

Both teams picked up the scoring pace in the second half as the Knights cut the deficit to nine on two occasions, the last being at the five minute mark.  Florida stayed hot from the floor hitting 22-of-37 (59.7%) while the Knights were 17-of-42 from the floor (40.5%) and hit 6-of-18 from 3-point range (33.3%).

J.J. Holt was the leading scorer for Southern Virginia with 28 points, while Dele Opeifa added 14, Tanner Johnson chipped in 13 and Bryce Pendleton added 10.  Florida College had Stanley Kelly add 19 points and six rebounds, Blake Elrod chipped in 12 points and 11 rebounds, Ian Jones scored 12 and Jesse Hastings scored 10.

Florida advances to face Rochester College in a Friday semifinal, while Southern Virginia will play for fifth place on Saturday morning at 11 am.
