Philander Smith advances to semifinals with 70-56 win over Robert Morris-Springfield

 

Broken Arrow, Okla. - The second-seeded Philander Smith Lady Panthers outscored seventh-seeded Robert Morris-Springfield 43-29 in the second half to pull away for a 70-56 victory in the 2008 U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association Women's Basketball Quarterfinals on Thursday.

After a rough first half that saw neither team hit over 30% from the floor, Philander Smith caught fire from the floor hitting 14-of-28 from the field (50%) and 14-of-16 from the foul line (87.5%).  The Lady Eagles were still not hitting on all cylinders as they hit 10-of-34 from the floor in the second half (29.4%).

Shalonie Hutchinson paced five in double figures for Philander Smith with 14 points while Sekenia Hicks added 12 points and 11 rebounds.  Meisha Williams, Brianna Austin and Chloe Williams scored 10 each for the Lady Panthers.  Stephanie Brake was the game-high scorer for Robert Morris-Springfield with 17 points and Lindsey Rogers chipped in 11.

Philander Smith now advances to face Spalding University in a 2 pm semifinal on Friday, while Robert Morris-Springfield faces Penn State-Beaver in an 8 am consolation matchup on Friday.
