AKRON, OH- Saint Mary of the Woods College continues their roll, defeating Briarcliffe College 6-1 to advance to the finals of the loser's bracket in the 2012 USCAA Softball National Championship. Saint Mary's, on the strength of a dominating performance by freshman pitcher Dannielle Owens, scores retribution against the Lady Bulldogs for their opening game loss and sends them home as the fourth place finisher in the tournament.
All-American Sara Goelz had three more RBI's for the Pomeroy's giving her seven on the day. Pomeroy's All-American Shelby Barnett added another three hits to her tournament total and contributed two runs scored and an RBI. Owens, who lasted only two innings in the early game, bounced back in the evening striking out nine Lady Bulldogs in a complete game performance. Briarcliffe College was led by All-American Erin Breslin who went 2-3 with an RBI and a stolen base. Fellow All-American Jillian McGovern added another hit, a stolen base, and pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief to round out her exceptional tournament.
Saint Mary of the Wood's College advances to play the number one seed, Carlow University, for a chance to play in the National Championship game(s) tomorrow at 12:00 PM. That game will be played at 8:00 PM tonight.
