Championship Game: #2 Briarcliffe (16) vs. #7 UC Clermont (4), 1:30 p.m.
The USCAA National Championship trophy is headed back to New York as Briarcliffe defeated UC Clermont 16-4. Briarcliffe broke the game open with a four-run fourth and a six-run sixth inning. They never trailed in the tournament and were tied in a game twice.
Briarcliffe was led by Tournament MVP Reggie Smith, who went 2-for-4 with two RBI's and three runs scored. Third baseman Dave Darcy also drove in five runs and was named Player Of The Day in the win for Briarcliffe.
The Championship is the the first for Briarcliffe since 2006 when they won the tournament at Florida College.
Championship Day-Thursday, May 13
Game 17: #7 Cincinnati Clermont (6) vs. #5 Penn State Beaver (3), 11 a.m.
UC Clermont will join Briarcliffe in this year's USCAA National Championship game(s) after knocking out Penn State Beaver 6-3.
The Cougars used a five-run second inning, fueled by a three-run homerun from Jeff Muse to jump out to a 5-0 lead. The Cougars would add another run in the fifth to extend their lead to 6-0.
Penn State Beaver showed signs of life as Marcus Allen ripped a three-run homer in the top of the sixth, but unfortunately for Beaver, they were unable to manufacture any more runs as UC Clermont used a strong defensive effort to seal the win.
UC Clermont will now move on to play Briarcliffe today at 1:30. In the double-elimination style tournament, UC Clermont will have to defeat Briarcliffe twice to take home the Championship. Briarcliffe only needs to win one to secure its first USCAA National Championship since 2006.
Day 3 Wednesday, May 12
Game 13: #8 Clark State Community College (3), #6 UC Clermont (10), 11 a.m.
Clark State Community College jumped out to an early two nothing lead, but was unable to sustain it as UC Clermont posted ten runs to advance to the next round 10-3. Chris Hundley picked up the win for the Cougars.
Offensively, Steve Hendrickson paced the Cougars going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's.
Clark State Community College's run at this years USCAA Championships has come to an end. UC Clermont will move on to face the winner of this afternoon's game between Apprentice School and Penn State Greater Allegheny. The game will take place tonight at 6:30 p.m.
Game 14: #7 Penn State Greater Allegheny (2), #1 Apprentice School (6), 1:30 p.m.
Penn State Greater Allegheny jumped out to an early two run lead on the Apprentice School, thanks to two walks, a hit batter, and a short stop error. Even so, Apprentice pitcher Tim Kehoe pitched a no-hitter, only the second in USCAA tournament history to help secure a 6-2 win for the Builders over PSU Greater Allegheny.
Offensively, Apprentice was lead by All-American Dory Fields, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and five RBI’s. He hit a two-run home run in the fourth and a three-run shot in the fifth to put the Builders up 5-2.
Game 15: #5 Penn State Beaver (1) vs. #2 Briarcliffe (6), 4 p.m.
Briarcliffe College was able to continue their winning ways as they defeated Penn State Beaver 6-1. Braircliffe's four run first inning proved to be all the amunition they needed as they advanced on in the winners bracket.
Briarcliffe was led offednsively by catcher Eric Weiner who went 2-for-2 with and RBI in the contest. Rick Doht secured the win in a complete game effort.
Briarcliffe will move on to play the winner of Penn State Beaver and UC Clermont/ Apprentice School tomorrow at 1:30 pm.
Game 16: #7 UC-Clermont (10), #1 Apprentice School (8), 6:30 p.m.
UC-Clermont advanced to the third-place game with a 10-8 win over the Apprentice School. Zach Barkalow was 2-for-4 with four RBIs to lead the Cougars. They broke the game open with a four-run third inning highlighted by a two-run double from Barkalow.
Apprentice School made things interesting scoring single runs in each of the final four innings, but left a runner on with a flyball to end the game. Jonathan Dehoux was 3-for-5 with three runs and two RBIs to lead the Builders who finished 26-15.
Cincinnati-Clermont advances to face Penn State Beaver at 11 am, with that winner having to face Briarcliffe for the title.
Day 2 Tuesday, May 11
Game 7: #8 Clark State Community College (17) vs. Central Maine CC (1), 8:30 a.m.
In the first game of day two, Southern State Community College (SSCC) ousted Central Maine Community College (CMCC) 17-1. SSCC used a 13 run 6th inning to finish off the Mustangs of CMCC.
SSCC was led by pitcher Brad Puckett. On the mound, Pucket held CMCC to only two hits, while striking out six. Offensively, Puckett helped his own cause by going 4-for-5, with two runs scored and three RBI's.
The loss drops CMCC out of the 2010 USCAA Baseball Championships, while the victory gives Clark State another shot at advancing as they will get the chance to take on #9 NHTI tonight at 6:30 p.m. The two teams have already met once in this year's tournament, with NHTI taking the opener 3-1.
Game 8:#7 Penn State Greater Allegheny (3) vs. #3 So. Virginia (2), 11 a.m.
Penn State Greater Allegheny gave their fans a scare as they headed into the top of the sixth inning down 2-0 to #3 Southern Virginia. However, a two run rally in the sixth and another run in the seventh propelled Penn State Greater Allegheny to a 3-2 victory over the Knights of Southern Virginia.
Freshman Mike Uhouse was the hero of the day for the lions, providing the game winning RBI as he drove in Ted Fricke to secure the win.
With the loss, Southern Virginia will bow out of this year’s national tournament. Penn State Greater Allegheny will move on to face co-host Southern Maine Community College tonight at 9 p.m.
Game 9: #1 Apprentice School (1), #5 Penn State Beaver (2)
It took nine innings, but Penn State Beaver was able to knock off #1 Apprentice School 2-1. Greg Frederick was the hero of the day for the PS Beaver, as he reached first on a throwing error and crossed the plate on a wild pitch in the top of the ninth to provide the winning run. Frederick has performed well to this point in the tournament providing the winning run against Apprentice School, and throwing a no-hitter yesterday against Central Maine Community College.
Penn State Beaver will move on to face the winner of UC Clermont and Briarcliffe tomorrow at 4 p.m. The Apprentice School will try and keep their Championship hopes alive as they move on to face the winner of the Penn State Greater Allegheny vs Southern Maine Community College matchup.
Game 10: #6 UC-Clermont (4), #2 Briarcliffe (8), 4 p.m.
Briarcliffe doubled up UC-Clermont for an 8-4 win Tuesday afternoon. Dave Darcy and Joe Solomeno, the third baseman and catcher respectively, paced Briarcliffe with two RBI's each.
After Briarcliffe posted a four-run inning in the bottom of the first, UC-Clermont responded with four of their own in the top of the second. Chris Alfaro blasted a three-run shot that helped aid the Cougars to tie the score.
Briarcliffe responded in the bottom of the second with four more runs to regain the lead for good. Along with Darcy and Solomeno's outstanding days at the plate, Kevin Licul also added three hits and an RBI.
Briarcliffe will move on to play #5 Penn State Beaver tomorrow at 4 p.m., while UC-Clermont will play the winner of the Clark State CC vs. NHTI match-up at 11 a.m.
Game 11: #8 Clark State Community College (5), #9 NHTI (4), 6:30 p.m.
It took eight innings, but Clark State Community College (CSCC) was able to avenge its first round loss against New Hampshire Technical Institute, Concords Community College (NHTI) with a 5-4 victory.
Down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, CSCC's Matt Luke scored on a Brad Puckett double to right center to even the score.
After holding NHTI scoreless in the top part of the eighth, Chad Robinson scored on a Luke single to left field to give CSCC the victory.
CSCC will advance to play #6 UC Clermont tomorrow at 11 a.m.
Game 12: #7 Penn State Greater Allegheny (11), #10 Southern Maine CC (4), 9 p.m.
In the final match-up of day two, co-host Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) was defeated 11-4. Facing a two run deficit in the bottom of the third, Penn State Greater Allegheny exploded for nine runs in the third inning to take a 9-2 lead. Sophomore Ted Fricke pitched a complete game to help seal the win for the Lions.
Penn State Greater Allegheny will move on tomorrow to face the Apprentice School at 1:30 p.m. Southern Maine will bow out of this year's tournament after puting on a strong showing as the lowest seed in the tournament.
Day 1 Monday, May 10
Game 1: #8 Clark State CC (1) vs. #9 NHTI (3), 8:30 am
In the first game of the 2010 USCAA Baseball Championships, New Hampshire Technical Institute, Concord's Community College (NHTI) slid past Clark State Community College 3-1.
Both teams were paced by strong pitching efforts. Luke Merrill threw a complete game, surrendering only one run on five hits to pick up the win for the Lynx. Nate Anthony turned in a strong effort for Clark State CC, surrendering only six hits and three runs in the loss.
NHTI will move on to face #1 seed The Apprentice School later today. Clark State CC will drop into the consolation bracket where they will meet the loser of tonight's game between #4 Central Maine and #5 Penn State Beaver.
Game 4: #3 Southern Virginia (1) vs. #6 UC Clermont (3), 11 am
In the second game of the day, the #6 University of Cincinnati-Clermont knocked off #3 Southern Virginia University (SVU) by a score of 3-1. After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead in the third, the UC-Clermont Cougars were able to fend off a late comeback attempt by the SVU Knights to secure the win.
Offensively, UC-Clermont was led by left fielder Andrew Hord. On the day, Hord went 2-4, with a double and two RBI's. Also helping secure the victory for the Cougars was pitcher Nate Jancsics who tallied a six hit complete game.
For the Cougars, the victory has pushed them along in the winners bracket, where they will face the winner of the Briarcliffe vs. Penn State Greater Allegheny/Southern Maine matchup. The game will take place tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. SVU will now move on to face the loser of the PSU Greater Allegheny/Southern Maine contest tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
Game 5: #1 Apprentice School (8) vs. #9 NHTI (2)
Courtesy of Jim Heath - Apprentice School SIDThe Apprentice School opened play in the 2010 U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships on Monday afternoon with an 8-2 victory over ninth-seeded NHTI-Concord’s Community College at The Ballpark.
That win puts the top-seeded Builders into a winners bracket semifinal on Tuesday afternoon against the winner of the 6:30 pm game on Monday night between fourth-seeded Central Maine Community College and fifth-seeded Penn State Beaver.
NHTI scored a run in the third inning as Luke Merrill’s deflected grounder enabled Chris Heney to score for a 1-0 Lynx lead.
The Builders answered with a four-spot in the bottom of the inning. Chris Scarola walked and went to second as Ryan Wagner was hit by a pitch. Following a strikeout and a groundout, Andrew Yonta was hit by a pitch to set up Dory Fields who cleared the bases with a three-run double. He scored as Chris Kennedy followed with a single for a 4-2 lead.
In the fourth, the Builders scored a pair more as with two outs, Wagner and Josh Tuck were hit by a pitch and both scored on a double by Jonathan Dehoux for a 6-2 advantage.
In the sixth, the Builders scored a pair more as Andrew Yonta reached on a fielders choice to plate Chris Scarola who started with a single. Fields followed with a RBI single to plate Wagner for the 8-2 lead.
NHTI scored a run in the seventh as Adam Roberts started the inning with a single and scored on a triple from Brian Finnegan.
Kennedy was the leading hitter for the Builders going 3-for-3 with a RBI, while Fields was 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Dehoux also added a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs to back the complete-game effort of Ethan Halberg. The freshman from Gloucester struck out six and allowed five hits to pick up his ninth win.
Zack Lemire was the leading hitter for NHTI going 2-for-3 as DJ Hodgdon took the loss allowing eight hits and striking out six. The Lynx will now play an elimination game at 6:30 pm on Tuesday night.
Game 2: #7 Penn State Greater Allegheny (3) vs. #10 So. Maine CC (5), 4 pm
Co-Host Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) came out strong in their first round match-up knocking off #7 Penn State Greater Allegheny 5-3. Southern Maine was led by Mustafa Jamal who pitched a complete game, while surrendering only three hits.
Offensively, SMCC was led by Scott Madden and Montana Colby, who each chipped in two runs in the victory.
SMCC will move on to play #2 Briarcliffe College tonight at 9. Penn State Greater Allegheny will move into the consolation bracket where they will face #3 Southern Virginia tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
Game 3: #4 Central Maine CC (0) vs. #5 Penn State Beaver (3), 6:30 p.m.
Central Maine Community College (CMCC) was hoping to replicate the success of fellow co-host Southern Maine Community College (SMCC) as they squared off against the fifth seed Penn State Beaver. Unfortunately for CMCC, PSU Beaver pitcher Greg Frederick decided to bring his best stuff. Frederick fired a no-hitter recording the first no-hitter in USCAA Tournament history as he paced his team to a 3-0 shutout over CMCC.
Offensively, Penn State Beaver was led by first baseman Cory Wagner, who pitched in a run scored and an RBI in the win.
Penn State Beaver earned a chance to play #1 The Apprentice School tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. Central Maine will move into the consolation bracket and face Clark State Community College tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m.
Game 6: #2 Briarcliffe (2) vs. #10 Southern Maine CC (1), 9 p.m - 8 innings
Sam Braverman's infield single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning scored Reggie Smith as second-seeded Briarcliffe defeated tenth-seeded Southern Maine CC 2-1 in the Monday night finale.
Smith was 3-for-4 for Briarcliffe and started the eighth with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. He went to third on a groundout before scoring on Braverman's single up the middle.
Lee Ranta earned the win for Briarcliffe throwing eight innings and striking out 12. They'll face UC Clermont at 4 pm on Tuesday afternoon.
SMCC was paced by Montana Colby and Nate Leeman going 2-for-4 apiece. Colby drove in the lone run for SMCC in the sixth with a double to score Christian Giles who had tripled. They'll face the winner of Penn State Greater Allegheny-Southern Virginia at 9 pm Tuesday night.
